Symantec dialog box asks for password

Several users, including myself, have experienced a Symantec (based on the logo in the top bar) dialog box that simply asks for a password. There is an OK button and there is a control at the top left to close the window. Closing the window successfully makes the dialog box diappear and does not appear to have any derogatory affects.  Could you possibly offer an explanation of what this might be?
